Advice for “Newbie” Singers

Advice for newbie singers

I worked with Sophie when she was a newbie singer.  We worked together for a couple of years on and off and it was a lovely experience.

I got in touch with her the other week to ask her for details of an app that helped her with her pitching when she was starting out with her lessons. She gave the app and then asked if I’d like any advice to pass on to the student.   I replied that would be great.  Sophie’s advice was so good I asked if I could share it more generally.

Sophie’s top tips

  • Defo try the faster to go higher thing with them*
  • Don’t overthink it, control doesn’t happen from nervousness.
  • Practice, practice, practice.
  • Take breaks, your voice will thank you.
  • Re-wind those parts of songs you’re unsure about, and go over it until you’re confident and also accurate with your delivery.
  • No self-limiting beliefs, you don’t know what you’re capable of if you box yourself in.

*  This refers to the idea that what we usually refer to as higher notes are actually faster notes.  The pitch is actually speed of vibrations.  So far I have only known a couple of students for whom this helps but it’s definitely worth exploring as a concept.
